Young adult fiction promises a teenage protagonist facing something for the first time, told with urgency and honesty. Readers expect a strong, immediate voice, stakes that feel enormous because they are personal, friendships and first loves taken seriously, adults mostly in the background, and an ending where the protagonist chooses who to become.

- Your premise shaped into one sentence, and what this shelf's readers still expect from it
- The beat map laid on your length: where the turns usually fall, in words and chapters
