Fern and the Forgotten Robot
by Carter Luense
A junkyard, a rusty helper, and one big promise
Fern is eight, new in town, and stuck all summer in her uncle’s junkyard, where Row Nine is strictly off limits. So of course that’s where she finds a rusty old helper robot with a bucket on its head and a very polite way of saying “Order received.” With a lantern battery, a roll of wire, and some help from a neighbor who fixes bikes, Fern brings it back to life. But the robot only knows how to follow orders, and a scrap company is coming to crush everything on the lot by Friday.
Ages 7–9. Readers learn that a circuit needs a complete loop to work, how to test and repair one safely, and that real friendship means asking for help and letting others choose for themselves.
